Mani Rimdu is one of the main festivals of Buddhist in Everest region. The 3 days long public open festival of Mani Rimdu festival performs at famed Tengboche monastery at 3800 meters. Buddhist monk exhibits the mask dances that depict the victory of Buddhism over the earlier Bon region. Before the Mask dance performed by monk they go though the preparation of festival likes the Sand Mandala, the Empowerment, the Fire Puja. Hundreds of local Sherpa of this region attend the special performance with due respect. The dances depict conquering and converting demons by Guru Rinpoche and the introduction of Buddhism into Tibet.

Mani Rimdu festival, unchanged for centuries is the annual full moon festival at the Tengboche monastery. The monks all dress up in mask to represent the old ghosts. The festival start with an elaborate depiction of the Mandala diagram made with color sand that is being taken from the holy hills. Normally the Mandala takes four days to draw, it is then covered, and is central of the religion festival that lasts for the next 10 days. The program includes 16 dances with interludes of comical effect.

Apart from the fresh air and green serenity of Tenboche monastery and delightful Mani Rimdu festival, you will witness the stunning view of world’s highest peaks mt. Everest, Amadablam, Nuptse, Lhotse, Thamaserku, Kantaga etc. The tall rhododendron forest is the home of Impeyan Pheasant, the national bird of Nepal, while the Huge vultures dominates the skies above. Yellow-billed chough and black ravens play on the wind. One can also see the thar, goral and musk deer grazing on the steps terraces. Rocks are carved into with prayer and a bright flag hung in high passes that carries the message of peace and compassion around the valleys.

Lama Gulu built the present Thyangboche in 1916 and this monastery has strong ties with Rongbuk monastery in Tibet. Earlier this monastery was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1934 and totally burnt to the ground on 19 Jan 1989. Thus Tenboche Mani Rimdu festival trek very special opportunity to trek the Sherpa heartland enjoying the spellbound Buddhist annual festival.
