Dolpo Trek- Journey to the vastness of the Mighty Virgin Himalaya

The Dolpo region is one of the least-visited trekking destinations of Nepal. Lying on the far-western side of Nepal, not many people have explored the beautiful landscapes of western Nepal. The Dolpo Trek is an unexplored rugged and remote trekking route along with the beautiful scenery of the snow-capped mountains and small villages that make this trek attractive. The alpine freshwater oligotrophic lake of Phoksundo and the beautiful Shey Phoksundo National Park are the major highlights of this trek.

Shey Phoksunda and Caravan Trail

The trek starts from Kathmandu. We fly to Nepalgunj from Kathmandu on the first day. We again take a short but beautiful flight to Juphal and start the trek. From Juphal, we start our trek to Shey Phoksundo Lake at a stunning height of 3612 meters. We continue to trek through the Shey Phoksundo National Park to reach Nangdala pass from where we can enjoy the beautiful view of Mount Kanjirowa. It has given birth to Peter Matthiessen's masterpiece and best-selling book Snow Leopard. Besides that Eric Valli, Oscar-nominated movie CARAVAN (also known as HIMALAYA) was featured in this isolated Himalayan sanctuary of Dolpo.

This trek takes us to some of the highest passes in western Nepal like the Sela pass. We get an outstanding view of the Mustang and the snow-capped mountains of Tibet. We then trek through the rugged Himalayan route to reach Saldang and visit the beautiful settlements inhabited by the Tibetan people. Trip to Upper Dolpo trekking crosses many mystical stunning peaks and witness the spiritual charms of the remote monastery of Shey Gompa. This monastery was established in the eleventh century and little has changed here since then. We climb the Jyanta pass via Tokyu village. From the pass, we can enjoy the magnificent view of Mount Dhaulagiri.

Trekking through one of the remotest and least trekked trekking routes of Nepal, we reach Juphal. On the way to Juphal, we trek through some of the most beautiful villages in this region, like Dho Tarap, Ghyamgar, and Dunai. We then fly back to Nepalgunj and then back to Kathmandu.

Upper Dolpo Trek - Permit, Best Time, Fitness

This Upper Dolpo trek is one of the most difficult treks in Nepal. There are very few hotels and lodges on this trekking route. We will reach the height of up to 5350 m at Nangdala pass. The trail is remote, and you pass by difficult terrain. Therefore, trekkers have to be physically and mentally prepared for this 26-day trek.

Spring and early winter are the best for trekking in Nepal. However, as this region lies in the rain shadow area, you can do this trek at any time of the year. Trekking during the winter months is hard as you trek higher, the weather becomes harsher. Spring and early winter are less risky than the winter season to do this Dolpa trek. You will require the restricted area permits special permit of the Upper Dolpa region along with the Shey Phoksundo National Park entry permit for this Upper Dolpo trek in the Himalaya.

At Mountain Monarch Adventure, we provide the timeliest services for our clients. As safety is our priority, you can feel at ease with our well-trained guides. We provide the best accommodation and transportation facilities available. We also offer three meals a day, porters, and guides during the trek.
