Our Crafted Annapurna Circuit Trek

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is a legendary journey that takes you to two iconic landmarks: Tilicho Lake and Thorong La. Both of these high-altitude viewpoints- Tilicho Lake (4919m), the highest lake in the world, and the well-known Thorong La Pass (5,416 m)- are the main attractions of this Annapurna Circuit trek. This 16 day Annapurna Circuit Trekking Itinerary covers around 120 km of strenuous walking in 10 days and winds through the heart of the Annapurna Himalayas. This Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake trek offers you a mesmerizing blend of mountains, the culture of various ethnic communities, and landscapes ranging from vivid green valleys and terraced farms to rugged high-altitude deserts crowned by snow-draped peaks.

Mountain Monarch is a leading and most reputable trekking company in Nepal, with decades of experience organizing safe, successful, and immersive Himalayan holidays. Our guides, including Armit Tamang, CP, and Sachit Rai, have put their years-long experience into crafting this Annapurna Circuit Trek itinerary. The revised Annapurna Circuit Trek itinerary covers all the highlights of a classic trek around Annapurna, including Tilicho Lake, while avoiding the recently built motorable roads at both ends. The Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake is the Himalayan voyage that showcases the region's best cultural and natural highlights. The trail winds through lush subtropical rhododendron forests to rugged landscapes, where ancient Tibetan fortresses cling dramatically to rocky cliffs, and the enigmatic Bonpo religion thrives alongside other traditions, creating an experience as rich in history as it is in natural splendor.

Trekking in Annapurna Region of Nepal, in the limelight since its opening in 1977, offers incredible short to long treks for a wide range of adventurers. From beginner-friendly Annapurna Panorama Trek to moderate-altitude Annapurna Sanctuary Trek and Annapurna Dhaulagiri Trek to high-altitude Annapurna Circuit Trek, spread over six districts, it has it all.

What is the 16 Day Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary with Tilicho Lake?

Also called the Annapurna Circuit Tilicho Trek for visiting both Thorong La Pass and Tilicho Lake, the 16-day Annapurna Circuit Hiking begins with a drive to Dharapani. Normally, we spend 2 nights in Kathmandu preparing for the trek before starting the Annapurna Circuit trek. From Dharapani, a walk passes by Chame, Upper Pisang, Ngawal, Manang, and Khagsar to reach Tilicho Base Camp and Tilicho Lake. The trek thereafter crosses the Thorong La Pass to Muktinath Temple, ending the 10-day strenuous high-altitude Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake. Then we drive to Kathmandu with an overnight stay in the lake city of Pokhara.

Dharapani, where we spend our first night at a teahouse on the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake, is surrounded by steep mountains and dense vegetation. Continuing the Annapurna Circuit trek, the next day’s walk to the Himalayan settlement of Chame offers the first view of Annapurna II. Around Pisang, the landscape begins to feel drier and more open, and the choice between the lower and upper trails becomes more than a matter of distance. We hike and stay in Upper Pisang; you get a different perspective of the valley and mountains.

The forests give way to pine and juniper, the valley widens and dries, and the architecture changes as we climb higher on this Annapurna Circuit Tilicho Lake trek. Before heading to Manang, we hike and stay the night in Ngawal village, considered one of the region's best viewpoints for its flat terrain and uninterrupted views of the Annapurna Himalayan range and Pisang Peak. Our next stop on the Annapurna Circuit trek is Manang, where culture, architecture, and landscape are closely connected. Stone–built homes, Buddhist monuments, prayer flags, and monasteries reflect a way of life shaped by a high–altitude environment where farming, trade, and community have always depended on the seasons. Modern amenities include bakeries, cafes, grocery and handicraft shops, laundry services, and yes, places serving proper espresso.

Our customized itinerary for the Annapurna Circuit journey detours from Manang towards Tilicho Lake via Shree Kharka and the Tilicho Lake base camp. This route takes us away from the main Annapurna Circuit and into one of the most dramatic parts of the journey. Weather and trail conditions can change quickly here, which is why our guides and our office team continually assess whether the planned route is appropriate and safe.

After a strenuous but mesmerizing hike to the highest lake at 4919 m, Tilicho, we return to the classic route around Annapurna to Yak Kharka; the trail climbs gradually towards Thorong La at 5,416 meters. The pass is one of the defining moments of the Annapurna Circuit, but reaching it is not simply about getting to the highest point. The days spent acclimatizing, walking steadily, and eating well beforehand are what make the crossing possible.

On the other side of Thorong La toward the end of our Annapurna Circuit trek, the landscape changes almost immediately. The green valleys of the lower Marsyandi feel far away. The trail descends towards Mukhtinath and the Kali Gandaki Valley. The dry landscape, stone houses, monasteries, and old trading settlements tell a different story from the villages where the trek began. This is one reason we continue to value the Annapurna Circuit as a journey rather than simply a trek. You cross more than a mountain pass. You hike through different climates, ecosystems, communities, and ways of life within a relatively short distance.

Classic Annapurna Circuit Trek Then and Now

The classic Annapurna Circuit Trek used to be a 3-week trek from Besishahar to Beni via Manang and Thorung La Pass, covering around 240 km. About a decade ago, the construction of the dirt road halved the classic Annapurna Circuit walking distance at both ends. Today, motorable roads connect both ends: from Besishahar to Dharapani and from Muktinath to Beni; so we start our Annapurna Circuit Trek with a drive to Dharapani and end our walk at Muktinath. Though the trekking days and distance are shorter, our itinerary still covers all the highlights and mountain profile of the classic Annapurna Circuit trek. Furthermore, we crafted our itinerary with a less-trodden route that the classic Annapurna Circuit trek tends to miss. Our new Annapurna Circuit itinerary with Tilicho Lake includes the hike to Ngawal via Ghyaur, which offers superior mountain views and better acclimation before we reach Manang. Then Tilicho Lake at an elevation of 4919 m (16,138 ft) adds stunning views and a challenge to our Annapurna Circuit Trek before we cross the well-known Thorung La Pass.

The Itinerary is a Plan, Not a Promise

A successful trek is not necessarily one where you follow every line of the itinerary. It is one where you return home safely, having honestly experienced the mountains. Our guides monitor the wind, snowfall, visibility, and trail conditions in advance by speaking with locals or authorities in the Annapurna Circuit Trekking region. We do this because weather is an important factor when trekking in the Himalayas. We have experienced that, even during peak seasons, we sometimes get snowstorms with wind speeds of 50-70 km/h, which can be very dangerous to trek in. When a snowstorm hits, it closes the pass; the route becomes impassable, and trails disappear beneath the snow. Combined with the wind, falling rocks might make continuing a very different proposition. That is when the itinerary stops being the most important thing.

In 2014, we were guiding an Annapurna Circuit Trek group to Thorong La Pass in November. Our head office in Kathmandu monitored the weather forecast; they contacted our guide, briefed him on the situation, and instructed him to return from Ledar just before the pass, before weather conditions deteriorated. Then a snowstorm struck the Annapurna region, mainly around the Thorong La Pass, where forty-two trekkers and crew lost their lives. It was a painful reminder that the mountain does not care how experienced, prepared, or determined you are. The weather can change the entire equation within hours.

That connection between Kathmandu and the mountain has remained important to us ever since. Our guides may be the ones walking beside our trekkers, but they are never truly alone. Behind them is a team watching the weather, communicating with the trail, and willing to change a plan when the mountain demands it.

What makes Hiking Around Annapurna with Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass Special?

The Annapurna Circuit Trek 16 days itinerary offers you everlasting views of gorgeous peaks right from the trek starting point to the end of the journey that are particularly panoramic from the high-altitude Thorong La Pass and Tilicho Lake, also serving as some of the best Annapurna viewpoints. Both are adventure masterpieces blending less-traveled trails with unparalleled Himalayan beauty. If you are someone seeking an authentic high-altitude trekking experience in Nepal, Annapurna Circuit Hiking is your answer.

Covering a large area, this classic Annapurna Circuit Trek along the Kali Gandaki River and Budhi Gandaki River is a fantastic alpine ramble that brings ancient temples and stupas to life with history and energy. So, you know what 2027 and 2028 are? It is time to set out on an epic Himalayan trek and craft unforgettable memories amid fascinating cultures, sky-high Himalayan views, and landscapes that contrast yet feel beautiful like never before.

Is the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake the right journey for cultural immersion and wildlife encounters?

The simple answer is yes. The high-altitude trek in Nepal that takes a round trip around the 10th tallest mountain on Earth, Mount Annapurna (8,091 m), entering deep into the country’s largest conservation area called Annapurna Conservation Area, is an unrivaled Himalayan voyage for cultural experience and wildlife observation. Spread over an area of 7,629 square kilometers covering parts of Kaski, Lamjung, Myagdi, Mustang, and Manang districts, regardless of the route you choose to pursue, trekkers are offered an insider insight into the unique culture and traditions of Himalayan locals, specifically those of the Gurung, Magar, Thakali, Managi, and Loba.

As you embark on this Himalayan route, Annapurna Circuit Trekking with Mountain Monarch, our professional guides, locals of the Himalayas who know the place inside and out, introduce you to spots with a higher chance of seeing a wide range of flora and fauna, including rare species like the Himalayan Thar, red pandas, and musk deer. Spotting a snow leopard is also possible, but only if you are immensely lucky. Regardless, the Annapurna Circuit Hike is a paradise for both cultural and wildlife enthusiasts.

As we start the Annapurna Circuit trek in the lower Marsyangdi Valley, many of the communities we pass through predominantly follow Hindu traditions, with temples and ghats. As we move higher towards Manang, a gradual change becomes visible. Buddhist traditions are becoming increasingly prominent, sometimes alongside Hindu practices rather than completely replacing them. Prayer flags, Mani walls, Chortens, and Monasteries begin to appear more frequently; it is not a sudden boundary but a gradual transition, much like the landscape itself.

After we cross the Thorong La Pass and descend towards Muktinath Temple at 3800 meters, we encounter another interesting cultural meeting. Muktinath is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus, and during the pilgrimage season you will often see many Indian pilgrims making their way here. At the same time, within the sacred complex, you will also find a prominent statue of Buddha and Buddhist religious elements. Different religious traditions often coexist, sharing the same villages, mountains, and sacred spaces. On the Annapurna Circuit, you do not simply travel from one culture to another; you get to see how they meet and co-exist.

Thorong La Pass to embrace Mount Annapurna up close

The Thorong La Pass, towering at 5,410 m above sea level, is the most challenging and rewarding part of the Annapurna Circuit Trek. Renowned for its panoramic views and close embrace of some of the top of the world: Mount Annapurna (8,091 m), Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), and other snow-clad mountain ranges. The views are simply marvelous, and you also get to catch a glimpse of the wind-sculpted Mustang Valley to the northwest, which was once the Forbidden Kingdom. So are the challenging, steep ascents and descents in high-altitude areas where Himalayan weather can change in an instant. The Thorong La Pass is physically demanding and requires a good level of fitness, a well-designed itinerary, and proper acclimatization.

Located between Manang and Mustang districts, Thorong La Pass is a beautiful experience when done with proper preparation and the right trek partner like Mountain Monarch. With us, you will start walking to the pass in the morning to avoid strong afternoon winds, while our itinerary ensures you are well acclimatized to the arduous mountain surroundings and comparatively low oxygen levels.

Why is Tilicho Lake worth a side trek during the Annapurna Circuit Hiking?

Tilicho Lake, at an elevation of 4,919 m, is the hidden jewel of the Annapurna Himalayas of Nepal, a must-visit place set like a natural amphitheater. It offers access to timeless traditions, lifestyles, and mountain views, guarded by snow-capped peaks that seem to touch the heavens. The sense of adventure and discovery as you step into the realm of turquoise beauty is surreal as you make your way through landscapes ranging from rugged cliffs to glacial valleys. Take your time to photograph the mighty Annapurna, Nilgiri, and Tilicho Peak, peaking into the sky all around Tilicho Lake. Further, this Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake route, even during the peak trekking seasons of Nepal, spring and autumn from March to May and September to November, receives a smaller number of visitors. It is an off-the-beaten-path trek through the tranquil villages of Bagra up to the awe-inspiring Tilicho Lake, one of the highest lakes on earth.

Unveiling the unparalleled natural beauty and high-altitude adventure in a single trip, Tilicho Lake stands out as one of the most iconic trekking destinations in Nepal, worth a side trek during the Annapurna Circuit Trekking.

Choose the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake for adventure with comfort and accessibility

Unlike most of Nepal’s popular hiking routes that have been recognized as some of the best trekking destinations in the world, such as the Everest Base Camp Trek, the Everest Three Passes Hike, and the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek, the Annapurna Circuit Trekking Trail is easily accessible and generally includes a drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara and now directly to Dharapani. While demanding, the trekking route features well-established teahouses, lodges, and guest houses to take care of your necessities that go side by side with a profound sense of accomplishment and true connection with the mythical Himalayas in the remote.

The high-altitude challenges are balanced by out-of-this-world natural and cultural beauty as you interact with smiling and friendly local people and see exceptionally stunning nature’s grandeur each day. If you are wondering what extraordinary things to do in 2027 and 2028. Let us help you set out on an amazing Himalayan odyssey to the Annapurna Circuit Trek that is not only humbling and stunning but also transformative, often leading to deep appreciation for what you have.

Trek Guide: the people who know beyond the trails

“A guide is not simply a person who walks in front of the group.”, says our Annapurna trekking expert C.P Rai, who has spent 3 decades walking in the trails of Nepal. Including CP rai, Amrit Tamang, Yam Tamang, Nima Nuru Sherpa, and Sachit Rai usually lead our groups in the Annapurna region. It is what the guide knows about the mountains that the map cannot tell: which trails become difficult or safer after rain or snow, or which village has the right people to turn to when something unexpected happens.

All of our guides have decades of guiding experience and are certified by the Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management, a premier Nepal government-run academy. They know the people, the families along the trail, and the communities that make the journey possible. When you do the Annapurna Circuit trek with Mountain Monarch, you are often arriving with someone who already knows the person waiting for you. The guides are not there just to show you the way; they help you understand the land, its people, the culture they follow, and the rhythm of the mountains. As a reliable company, we ensure supplementary Oxygen and a comprehensive medical kit on the trek, with enough trek crew to support you at every step of your journey on the Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass.

Most trekkers often notice that local dogs following them as they start the trek to get a treat while walking with trekkers and the trek crew. After Manang, something changes. As you leave for Shree Kharka and Tilicho Base Camp, the dogs that have been accompanying you disappear. They seem to know exactly where the food ends, so they rarely follow trekkers further into the higher, more remote sections of the trail.

What our Trekkers say about their Annapurna Circuit Trekking

Among hundreds of trip reviews, here is some of our trekkers’ feedback they have written on Trip Advisor. Almost 100% of trekkers who join the Annapurna Circuit trek complete it safely with a great adventure experience of a lifetime.

Amazing, knowledgeable trekking company

“We used Mountain Monarch for our private group trip to the Annapurna Circuit trek. I can’t rate the company highly enough. Pradip was great from the start answering our queries and aiding us to plan a personalised trip for our group of 4. On arriving in Kathmandu, we were greeted at the airport by our friendly and amazing guide for the trek Sachit who made us feel special and welcome throughout the whole trip. The company provided high quality, clean down jackets, duffle bags, and sleeping bags/liners for the trip and filtered water throughout the trek. The guide/ porter team of Sachit, Sumit, Abinash, and Bhupendra were friendly, knowledgeable, incredibly strong, yet caring and accommodating, adapting our trek and plans according to our group and the changing weather conditions. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending Mountain Monarch for Nepalese trekking adventures. Thank you all for an amazing trip. Julie M in April 2026 from Australia

“We recently completed the Annapurna Circuit with Mountain Monarch. We would unreservedly recommend them for those wishing to trek in Nepal. For context, we have hiked worldwide with Western adventure companies; Explore, World Expeditions and Exodus. MM was superior in many ways and deficient in none. Their goal was to ensure a successful and safe experience for all clients. From the hand sanitizer they carried and put out whenever we ate (reducing the chance of illness) to providing one guide and two assistant guides plus three porters for only 5 of us, to the extensive first aid kit – visibly carried by one guide (for quick access) we felt our needs were being looked after. Pradip was very willing to adjust the trip to meet our travel needs and always had a quick reply to any emails. It was a treat to have Pradip himself or our guide Arjun meet/drop us off at the airport, rather than negotiating that on our own, late at night, as we have had to do with other providers. We appreciated that Mountain Monarch is a local Nepali company, but very aware of the needs and standards of Western travelers. By Karen and Ken in April 2014 from Calgary, Canada

Beside being the capital city of Nepal, Kathmandu is a cultural melting pot, home to at least seven of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Boudhnatha Stupa and Pashupatinath Temple in the morning and later on Swayambhunath and the trilogy of ancient Durbar Squares called Basantapur, Bhaktapur, and Patan in the evening, a perfect introduction to the Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal.

Day 03
  • Accommodation: Local-Tea-House
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner
  • Max altitude: 1,860m

The journey for Annapurna Circuit Trekking officially begins this day with an early morning drive to Besisahar from Kathmandu, marked by the finest views of tumbling whitewater rivers, scenic terraced farms, and traditional Nepali villages with glimpses into the rural life. You will stop at Bhulbhule for lunch and then change the vehicle into a jeep until you arrive at your destination of the day, Dharapani, along the rugged, gurgling road with some bumps.

Day 04
  • Accommodation: Local-Tea-House
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner
  • Max altitude: 2,685m

Now begins the footwalking from Dharapani to reach Chame, one of the typical mountain dwellings along the Annapurna Circuit Trekking Trails featuring typical Tibetan architecture dotted in between the forests of fir and pine. In a short time frame, you will notice the transition in landscape from lower wet valleys to the arid area of the Manang Valley, passing through beautiful waterfalls, thrilling wooden suspension bridges, and stunning first glimpses of Mount Annapurna and Lamjung Himal to check in at Koto before you finally stop at Chame for the night.

Day 05
  • Accommodation: Local-Tea-House
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner
  • Max altitude: 3,475m

Now, you will leave Chame behind and head to yet another mountain village called Upper Pisang that still retains ancient culture, traditions, and ways of life. The trail is through fields of barley, buckwheat, and apple orchards at Brathang (2,840 m), a former Khampa (Tibetan rebel settlements) for lunch. Thereafter, you will cross the river, entering into thick forests of fir that clear out the way to huge rock slabs of Paungda Danda. Continuing from here, by afternoon, you would have already made it to the flat stone house of Pisang village, watched over by the towering peaks of Annapurna II and Pisang Peak itself.

Day 06
  • Accommodation: Local-Tea-House
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner
  • Max altitude: 3,650m

Like usual, the hike begins early in the morning after a serene breakfast amidst the stunning natural and unspoiled cultural beauty of the Annapurna region. The path is a gradual ascent, slowly moving through typical mountain settlements dotted with mani walls and gompas adorned with colorful flags, which is more vivid in the charming village of Ngawal. The cultural immersion is immense, and so are the mountain views.

Day 07
  • Accommodation: Local-Tea-House
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner
  • Max altitude: 3,650m

The hike from Ngawal to Manang spans a relatively short amount of time, leaving you with ample afternoon and evening time to explore the area. On the way, you may encounter goats and yaks grazing on hillsides, while the visit to Braga Monastery perched high on the valley cliffs adds much to the cultural experience, often inviting a spiritually rejuvenating ambiance in serenity to soak in before you call it a day at Manang, which is only a short walk from here.

Day 08
  • Accommodation: Local-Tea-House
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner
  • Max altitude: 3,756m

Are you ready to enter deeper into the high-altitude landscapes where the sky horizon is dominated by striking views of snow-capped mountain giants like Annapurna II and Gangapurna? Expect the trail to get rugged as you approach Khangsar, giving you a taste of the upcoming trail to reach Tilicho Base Camp and the turquoise beauty of Tilicho Lake water, which, despite being an alpine freshwater lake, has not recorded any aquatic living beings. The sense of remoteness surrounded by mountain scenery is addicting.

Day 09
  • Accommodation: Local-Tea-House
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner
  • Max altitude: 4,150m

Instead of directly ascending to Tilicho Lake, you will stop by Tilicho Lake Base Camp from Khangsar so you are well acclimatized to mountainous surroundings and you do not see any health complications like acute mountain sickness (AMS) due to high altitude. The crisp air, raw wilderness, and dramatic landscape with towering cliffs, each step is with an interesting twist to keep you excited until you reach the base of Tilicho Lake.

Day 10
  • Accommodation: Local-Tea-House
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner
  • Max altitude: 4,919m

It is one of the special days when you finally get to admire the grandeur of the shimmering beauty of Tilicho Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world, that the French Expedition Team even gave the title of The Great Ice Lake, the epitome of unparalleled serenity amidst Tilicho Himal, the Annapurna range, and Nilgiri Himal, along with other neighboring snow-clad peaks. After relishing one of the best moments of your life, worth every step, you will retrace the path back to Shree Kharka before the afternoon to avoid strong winds.

Day 11
  • Accommodation: Local-Tea-House
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner
  • Max altitude: 4,200m

A good morning breakfast, and the ascending trail continues and takes a short break at Tengi, where the route branches away from Marsyangdi Valley and follows Jarsang Khola that goes back and forth through scrub juniper and grasses, replacing sparse fire and pine. If luck favors you, you may encounter elusive blue sheep or even majestic snow leopards on the way to Yak Kharka, from where Ledar is only a few hours of walking, including hiking across ancient Mani walls.

Day 12
  • Accommodation: Local-Tea-House
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner
  • Max altitude: 4,800m

You know what time it is; it is to reach the base of Thorong La Pass. Leaving Ledar, the ascent is along a rugged and narrow trail before finally descending to Thorong Phedi for the night. Physically demanding and rewarding, a surreal visual feast to spend the night witnessing snow-washed mountain peaks making their way to starry stars up in the sky.

Day 13
  • Accommodation: Local-Tea-House
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner
  • Max altitude: 5,416m

The day you have been impatiently waiting for is finally here, when you will pave your way through one of the highest mountain passes in the world with the closest embrace of Mount Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, which includes passing through several prayer flags tied there to manifest good luck in rugged and steep terrain. Be extra cautious about loose boulders, landslide-prone areas, and icy trails, eventually making your way to the spiritual center of the Annapurna Trekking Region, Muktinath Temple premises.

Day 14
  • Accommodation: Standard Hotel
  • Meals: Breakfast-Dinner
  • Max altitude: 3,800m

With a recent direct road connection from Pokhara to Muktinath and vice versa, on this day, you will ride a jeep back to Pokhara, also called Nepal’s city of lakes, a serene valley, and a popular tourist hub after Kathmandu. Beginning early in the morning, by lunchtime, if everything goes as planned, you will have made it to Pokhara by lunchtime. For the rest of the day, you can engage in outdoor activities like paragliding, boating, kayaking, or simply strolling around peaceful Phewa Lake.

Day 15
  • Accommodation: Standard Hotel
  • Meals: Breakfast-Dinner
  • Max altitude: 1,330m

You are almost at the end of your 16 days Annapurna Circuit Trek itinerary as you return to Kathmandu from Pokhara via one of the most beautiful highways along the bank of roaring rivers. You can choose to fly for over 20-30 minutes as well, but it is at an extra cost. Regardless, you will have ample time to rest and explore the vibrant streets of Thamel one more time and shop for souvenirs to take home.

Day 16
  • Meals: Breakfast

The Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trek concludes this day with your flight back home or your next travel destination. Reminiscing all the exhilarating experiences of the Himalayan trip in Nepal, it is the day when you will bid farewell to magnificent hills and mountains. How is the Food, Drinking Water, and Accommodation on the Annapurna Circuit Trek?

One of the things that surprises many of our guests is just how much food is available on the Annapurna Circuit Trek in the Himalayas; you can find pizzas, pasta, noodles, sandwiches, pancakes, and, in some places, even lasagna. After several days of walking, having something familiar on the menu can feel like a small luxury, but when we trek at altitude, we ask our guests to think about food a little differently.

Food is not simply something to look forward to at the end of your Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake; it is part of how we prepare your body for the next day. This is one reason why we often recommend Dhal Bhat on the Annapurna Circuit trek. This Dhal Bhat is a Nepalese everyday meal: rice, lentil soup, vegetables, and usually a selection of seasonal sides such as potatoes, spinach, radish, or other vegetables. It is simple and familiar, combining carbohydrates, protein, and vegetables into a meal that has been part of mountain life for generations. You do not have to eat Dhal Bhat at every meal. We want our guests to enjoy their food and try the different dishes available along the trail, but mostly safer Nepalese meals; when you are unsure what to order, Dhal Bhat is often the meal we come back to.

There is another reason we pay close attention to food on any trek, including the Annapurna Circuit trek – how it is prepared matters just as much as what is on the plate. During peak trekking seasons, tea houses can be under enormous pressure. Ingredients must travel long distances, refrigeration can be limited at higher elevations, and kitchens may suddenly have to prepare meals for dozens of hungry trekkers. Our guides therefore pay close attention to where and how food is prepared. We would much rather spend some time making sure a meal is safe than have a guest lose an entire day, or worse, abandon the trek due to food poisoning.

The Annapurna region sees thousands of trekkers each year, and much of the waste collected consists of plastic bottles, wrappers, cans, and other materials that remain in the environment for decades. In the mountains, waste collection and transportation are difficult; even a small amount can add up and ruin the fragile ecosystem. One of the simplest ways we thought of to reduce this was by providing drinking water ourselves. Mountain Monarch provides filtered water to discourage our guests from buying bottled mineral water on this Annapurna Circuit Trekking route.

We stay at a locally run teahouse. These teahouses are traditionally furnished and have twin-sharing beds with simple mattresses, pillows, and so on. How is the Annapurna Circuit Trip in Winter? Best Time for Annapurna Circuit Trek

Yes, winter in Nepal, especially December, is one of the best times to visit the Annapurna Circuit Trekking Trail for those seeking a more serene, isolated experience, when the upper Himalayas are completely covered in snow, creating a unique wonderland. The skies are also often clear, offering excellent visibility of the surrounding peaks, an ideal time for experienced hikers who do not wish to break the bank and are keen to have a solitary experience, but only after preparation according to the season.

Around Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass, temperatures can drop below freezing, snowfall may obstruct the trail, and visibility may be limited by icy conditions, requiring extra caution and the use of crampons. This is why spring and autumn in Nepal, from March to May and September to November, are regarded as the optimal time for high-altitude trekking, including for the Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake. These months of the year offer clear skies, stable weather, and mild temperatures, where spring brings blooming rhododendron forests at lower altitudes while autumn coincides with two of the biggest Nepalese festivals called Dashain and Tihar, an ideal time to delve into the rich cultural tapestry of Nepal!

How does the Landscape change during the Annapurna Circuit Trek from start to end?

This 16-day Annapurna Circuit Hike starts at Dharapani with lush green forests, terraced fields, and roaring rivers. Due to the warm and humid climate, you can find dense vegetation and villages surrounded by rice paddies. As you ascend, the landscape along the Annapurna Circuit hiking route changes from alpine meadows with sparse vegetation and human settlements to arid landscapes, then to rugged terrain and dramatic cliffs around Manang and Khangsar. The major highlights of the Annapurna Circuit trek are Thorong La Pass and Tilicho Lake, with spectacular viewpoints amid snow-capped peaks. The vegetation is minimal, and so are the human dwellings, a perfect natural escape from the chaos of the modern world that is challenging and rewarding, a visual delight as you pave the way on each turn!

What makes hiking to the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake difficult? Who can do this trek?

The Annapurna Circuit is a mountain trail in Nepal considered a moderate-to-challenging trek, yet achievable for anyone with a good level of physical fitness and preparation, if determined. The primary concern is high altitude, which, if ascended too quickly, can cause acute mountain sickness (AMS) or altitude sickness once you begin traversing trails above 3,000 m. Long trekking days on terrain with steep ascents, descents, and rugged sections can be physically demanding, especially given unpredictable Himalayan weather. This is why trekkers embarking on the Annapurna Circuit Hike are advised to begin exercises to strengthen their core and muscles, including hiking practices on local trails that resemble high-altitude trekking conditions, a month prior, preferably starting three months prior.

If well prepared with proper packing, physical and mental conditioning, and proper acclimatization, the journey to Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake is suitable for both novice and seasoned trekkers, and is especially beneficial for those with experience in high-altitude trekking, climbing, and hiking. However, if you have lung, heart, or knee issues, consult your doctor first.

Can you go for a solo trek to Thorong La Pass and Tilicho Lake?

Yes, but only if you are acquainted with one of the licensed guides from a government-authorized trekking agency like Mountain Monarch. With the ban on free individual trekkers (FITS) in Nepal from April 1st, 2023, it is mandatory that you at least hire local guides before you officially embark on any trekking trails in the remote Himalayas, conservation areas, national parks, and restricted areas. That is why, whether you are going for a solo, group, private, or family Himalayan trip, hiring guides or porters is a must. A well-experienced guide, local to the Himalayan regions of Nepal, not only provides you with effective navigation on difficult terrain that poses potential risks due to unfamiliarity but also assists you immediately in an emergency, arranges meals and accommodations, and arranges permits.

Side by side, they are the cultural ambassadors for you who will keep you aware of local norms and values so you have an insider insight into the Himalayan lifestyle, leave a positive impression, and establish a genuine connection to people, culture, nature, and mountains as they introduce you to the most well-known and hidden gems of the area you are venturing into during the Annapurna Circuit Trekking, crossing the Thorong La Pass and visiting Tilicho Lake. Book with us now and enjoy a safer, smoother trekking experience in Nepal. We provide the best guides and porters, the backbone of the immersive Himalayan odysseys, where porters carry your heavy loads so you can conserve energy and soak it all in on the trail.
