The 22 days for Chulu West Peak Climbing itinerary begins with arrival in Nepal, and after a preparation day, also visits the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Kathmandu Valley. On the third day, you officially head off to the trail. Start preparation now!

What to expect during the Chulu West Peak Climb in Nepal?

Chulu West Peak climbing in the Annapurna Himalayas, home to the 10th-highest mountain peak, Mount Annapurna (8,091 m), is suitable for those seeking achievable high-altitude mountaineering. It takes you through the scenic trails within the largest conservation area of Nepal, the Annapurna Conservation Area, gradually giving way to the desert-like barren highlands passing via Manang.

However, with an increase in altitude, the atmospheric pressure decreases, and on rapid ascents without proper acclimatization, one may suffer from symptoms of altitude sickness. Long hours of walking—6–8 hours once the trek begins— can be mentally and physically exhausting, especially in rugged and remote areas. The unpredictable Himalayan weather can add to the logistical changes to pack accordingly.

Where is Chulu Peak located?

Chulu Peak is a group of trekking peaks: Chulu East (6,584 m/21,601 ft), Chulu West (6,419 m/21,059 ft), Chulu Central (6,529 m/20,535 ft), and Chulu Far East (6,059 m/19,880 ft) in the Annapurna region of Nepal. All located 6,000 m above sea level, part of the Damodar Himal range, rising up the beautiful Marsyangdi River Valley, there are two trekking routes that you can follow to arrive at the Chulu West Peak Base Camp for climbing.

The popular trail is linked with the Annapurna Circuit Trek, while many also suggest following the Jomsom Thorong La Pass Trek route for better acclimatization opportunities. If you prefer, we can arrange a trek along the Jomsom Thorong La Pass Hiking trail as well; otherwise, the 22 days for Chulu West Peak Climbing itinerary begins trekking from Besisahar and progresses via the Annapurna Circuit Hiking route.

Mountain views during the Chulu Peak Expedition

From the top of the Chulu West Peak, trekkers and climbers can relish the panoramic Himalayan views of several mountain ranges: Annapurna II, III, and IV; Gangapurna; Dhaulagiri; and Tilicho Peak. Especially during sunrise when the first ray of sunlight paints the entire mountainous landscape, including the summits of sky-towering snow-capped mountain range, into the hue of gold, pink, and orange, the views are magical.

Playing hide and seek with you right from the trek starting point, the summit point of Chulu West Peak provides you with exclusive, close-up, rare sights that only those who make it can experience and see. Beginning from the lush green valleys, slowly transiting into the alpine meadows and the winterland, covered by snow throughout the year, the sense of achievement standing amidst the mountain giants is unparalleled.

Cultural landmarks on the Chulu Peak trekking and climbing trails

The Chulu West Peak Climbing journey also passes through the mountain villages where time seems to have stopped. Miles away from the fast-paced city area, almost untouched by modernity, the villages of Manang, Chame, Pisang, Ngawal, and Ledar, and the Muktinath Temple, ensure you have an immersive cultural experience. Inhabited by Gurung, Manangi, and Tibetan-influenced communities, genuine hospitality is a part of the Himalayan adventure.

The chortens, colorful prayer flags, and centuries-old stone houses add much to the cultural dimension. All of these also provide just the perfect place to take a break, self-reflect, and let yourself be free in the serene lap of the Himalayas. If you prefer, you may extend your stay and spend an extra day at Braga Monastery, which offers insight into monastic life, Buddhist culture, and Himalayan Buddhist art. Meanwhile, Muktinath is one of the Char Dham of the world.

Can you see wildlife on the journey to Chulu Peak West?

The Chulu West trekking peak is within the largest conservation area of Nepal, the Annapurna Conservation Area. Spread over an area of 7,629 square kilometers and established in the year 1992, the premises are a natural habitat for a wide range of flora and fauna. As the climbing journey to Chulu West Peak goes through the rhododendron forests, pine woodland, and alpine meadows, you have ample opportunities for wildlife spotting.

In the low and mid altitudes of the Annapurna Himalayas that you embark through, including during the Chulu West Peak Expedition of 22 days, you have higher chances of encountering birds like the Himalayan monal, snow pigeon, and choughs; yak herds; and, on a lucky day, rare wildlife like Himalayan blue sheep (Bharal) and red pandas; and, if nature favors you in higher altitude snowy areas, the majestic snow leopard as well.

How is the Chulu Peak West Summit Day?

Among the 22 days for the Chulu West Peak Climbing Itinerary, the Chulu West Peak summit day is the most significant and begins earlier than usual, so you can start and complete the climbing in the morning and avoid the afternoon wind, known for its precarious nature. On this day, one must be prepared for both the physical and mental challenges that the alpine trekking and climbing route presents.

Expect the trail to be rocky, snowy, and icy, and also with glacier navigation often requiring the use of crampons, ice axes, jumars, and ropes. While the breathtaking scenery as you stand atop makes it rewarding with a profound sense of achievement on this day, it has a high risk of acute mountain sickness (AMS), and you also need to be conscious of changing Himalayan weather, so you need to pick only the optimal seasons of spring and autumn.

Leaving Dharapani behind, now trekkers follow off the beaten trekking trail to reach Manang. It passes through the typical mountain villages of Chame, Pisang, and Ngwal. Day 08
  • Accommodation: Local-Tea-House
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner

The actual high-altitude trekking and climbing journey starts from Ledar. Expect narrower, rugged, and more remote trails with noticeably thinner air as you go higher. Alpine meadows, yak pastures, and small yet charming mountain villages like Tengi and Gunsang keep you entertained.

Day 9-10
  • Accommodation: Camping-Tent
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner

Today is one of the most significant days, as you finally head to the Chulu West Base Camp, an uphill climb from Ledar. If any queries, ask now.

Day 11-12
  • Accommodation: Camping-Tent
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner

As you know, a rapid ascent to a higher altitude can trigger altitude sickness. From Base Camp, you stop at High Camp instead of directly summiting Chulu West Peak. The trail begins with a gentle ascent, with some steep uphill climbs and some descents. The views of the mountains keep you thrilled while you spend an extra day acclimatization as well.

Day 13
  • Accommodation: Camping-Tent
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner

The climb from High Camp to Camp I is a steady uphill push over mixed snowy and rocky terrains. Be cautious of icy patches and occasional crevasses; sometimes you might also have to use fixed ropes on steeper sections. The views of the Annapurna and Marsyangdi Valleys make up for it, and you spend overnight at Camp I.

Day 14-15
  • Accommodation: Camping-Tent
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner

The day you have been waiting for is finally here at the top of the Chulu West Peak. You start even before dawn, so you can complete the summit earlier than the strong afternoon storms. Day 15 is a reserve, i.e., contingency day, in case the weather does not support the summit day.

Day 16
  • Accommodation: Local-Tea-House
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner

After the summit day, it is the day you begin descending, and the destination of the day is none other than Ledar. One more time, along the rugged ridgelines and open slopes as the trekking trail loses altitude, the air becomes warmer, and the landscape also shifts from snowy to drier terrain.

Day 17
  • Accommodation: Local-Tea-House
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner

Today, you head to the base camp of one of the high mountain passes in the Annapurna Trekking Region, Thorong La Pass (5,416 m). From Ledar, you trek in the northern direction, some sections also through the landslide-prone areas, so be extra cautious, where several small streams add much to the scenery.

Day 18
  • Accommodation: Local-Tea-House
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner

On this day, you make it to the highest point of the Annapurna Circuit Trek, Thorong La Pass (5,416 m). From Thorong Phedi, trekkers will move to the Muktinath area with one of the most revered Hindu temples of Lord Vishnu. To reach the top is a steep ascent, and then there is a descent, through Chaharu and the Yak Herder’s ruin, finally to the pilgrimage site.

Day 19
  • Accommodation: Local-Tea-House
  • Meals: Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner

As usual, the day begins after breakfast, and on the 19th day of the 22-day Chulu West Peak Climbing Itinerary, you will bid farewell to the Annapurna Himalayas. Take in all that it has to offer before hopping on dusty mountain roads, slowly rejoining the Nepal city of lakes, Pokhara.

Day 20
  • Accommodation: Standard Hotel
  • Meals: Breakfast

Pokhara is yet another tourist hub of Nepal after Kathmandu and its Thamel. Also called adventure’s paradise with a lot of thrilling activities to do, including boating, kayaking, paragliding, ziplining, take a round tour to the city’s visit Mahendra Cave, Seti Gorge, and Bindabasini Temple, or simply rest.

Day 21

Additional Info

When is the best time for climbing to Chulu West Peak?

It is because the months of spring and autumn, from March to May and September to November, feature the most stable Himalayan weather, mild temperatures, dry trekking trails, and clear skies. These are also the best times of the year for the Chulu West Peak Expedition as well. In winter, the Upper Himalayas get unbearably cold, and in summer, due to frequent rainfall, trails can suffer from floods and landslides, leading to blockages.

I.e., the spring and autumn offer you the safest and most suitable Himalayan weather and climate in Nepal for Himalayan voyages, including to Chulu West Peak, and especially for beginners, it is a must that you book at the most optimal times of the year. In spring, the fresh bloom of colorful rhododendron awaits you, and in autumn fall two of the biggest Nepalese festivals, Dashain and Tihar, offer deeper cultural insights.

Food and accommodation during the Chulu West Peak Expedition

Along the trekking route to reach Chulu West Peak, trekkers and climbers can find several teahouses offering daily meals, accommodation, and other available facilities, if any, like wifi, hot showers, and sometimes private rooms. However, from Chulu Base Camp, i.e., once the climbing phase begins, camping tents set up by the team from Mountain Monarch are those who take care of your lodging, food, and its hygiene.

While you can find varieties like guest houses, lodges, and homestays in accommodation and western, Nepalese, and Tibetan menus in dishes, at high altitude, the choices are limited but adequate enough to provide you a comfortable place to rest and filling and nutritious meals. If you have any dietary requirements, like lactose-free or vegetarian, or are allergic to anything, do inform us while booking so we can arrange accordingly.

What are the permits for the trekking and climbing journey to Chulu West Peak?

Trekkers and climbers embarking on the route to climb Chulu Peak need at least three permits: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), the TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) card, and the climbing permit from NMA (Nepal Mountaineering Association). These permits ensure your legal access to the trekking and climbing region, and for it, it is a must that one be accompanied by a professional local mountain guide.

The Chulu West Peak Climbing permit fee goes to recording the tourist activities, a part of it to conservation projects, and also to providing help to trekkers and climbers in need. The procedure to follow for permits can be a hassle, especially if you are planning a solo Chulu West Peak climb. Therefore, it is better to purchase a comprehensive package from a reliable trekking and climbing agency that handles all for you.

Chulu West Peak Climb Difficulty Level: Who can do this?

The Chulu West Peak climbing expedition is considered moderately to strenuously difficult with some technicality. Best done by those with high-altitude experience and someone with basic to moderate mountaineering knowledge and skills, while beginners with proper preparation can also complete the high-altitude Himalayan climbing trip, it is a must that you have a very good level of physical fitness.

Several days of walking, some days even through the rocky trails in low presence of oxygen, and especially during the summit attempt, including glacier crossings, it is not for people with faint hearts. The region is almost completely devoid of good medical facilities; therefore, if you are someone with issues with your heart, lungs, or knees, consult with your doctors at first before booking the trip.

How should you prepare for climbing Chulu West Peak in Nepal?

A proper preparation for a successful, smoother, and more enhanced climb to Chulu West Peak in Nepal includes both physical and mental conditioning. Understanding that there are steep uphill and downhill walks and uneven trails, and carrying a backpack of at least 6 kg on average 6-8 hours a day, begin training at least 1-2 months before. Engage in cardiovascular activities like running, climbing, cycling, and hill training.

It is so that your legs and muscles are stronger, and your body is used to less oxygen. Trekking to local high-altitude terrain that mimics the Himalayan trekking and climbing route to Chulu West Peak with at least a 6 to 12 kg backpack is highly recommended. Understanding the basic living conditions is a must, and a strong mind makeup is essential for remote trails away from everyday modern amenities.
