Trip Overview

Annapurna Machhapuchre Trek, widely famous as the Mardi Himal Trek or the Mardi Himal Base Camp Trekking, is one of the best short Annapurna Treks in Nepal that offers you a close-up encounter with the iconic Mt. Machhapuchre (Fishtail) and other surrounding mountain ranges. The standard Annapurna Machhapuchre Trek itinerary spans less than two weeks yet ensures you an immersion into the untouched beauty of the Annapurna region.

After a drive to Phedi from Pokhara on the 4th day, is when you begin walking on foot. You enter into the country’s largest conservation area, the Annapurna Conservation Area, which is further home to several Himalayan trekking trails such as the classic Annapurna Sanctuary Trek, the legendary Annapurna Classic Circuit Trek, the short Annapurna Panorama Trek, and the Annapurna Dhaulagiri Trek. i.e., you can expect a serene nature walk.

The Annapurna Machhapuchhre hiking progresses through lush forests and quaint Himalayan settlements that are home mostly to Gurung and Magar, alongside a few Brahmin and Sherpa populations who have just begun to embrace tourism. The Annapurna Machhapuchre trekking route is known to only a few but is well trodden by locals and is now well supported by newly established teahouses. There is no need for camping like in earlier days.

If you are looking forward to one such doable Himalayan adventure that combines raw natural beauty with authentic cultural encounters, offering a true nature escape, Annapurna Machhapuchre Trekking (Mardi Himal Trekking) is fantastic. Bookings are now open at Mountain Monarch for 2026 and 2027. With the transparent Annapurna Machhapuchre Trek cost, we guarantee you a hassle-free experience with 24/7 support from start to end. Book now!

What makes the Annapurna Machhapuchre Trekking Trail special?

At a moderate altitude, the Annapurna Machhapuchre Trek is a quieter alternative to more crowded, similar treks in the Annapurna region. It takes you through quiet, lush forests and typical mountain villages and slowly into the alpine zone with less vegetation but with finer and more open views of the surrounding mountain ranges. Beyond it, interaction with local Gurung and Magar communities is what makes it further intriguing.

The much-feared altitude is there, but is manageable to any healthy individual with a good level of physical fitness. Yes, it is less trodden and offers much more seclusion and peace as such during remote and rugged camping-style treks such as the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek, the Upper Mustang Valley Trek, and Upper Dolpo, but with easier accessibility. So if you are excited about doing the raw Himalayan wilderness, the Mardi Himal Trek is a must-book now.

Where does the Annapurna Machhapuchre Trek take place?

The Annapurna Machhapuchre Trekking Trail lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area of north-central Nepal in the Annapurna trekking and climbing region. It is easily accessible from Pokhara, yet unlike several other Annapurna hiking journeys, it remains entirely pedestrian and also less trodden, offering you a pristine sanctuary to relish true wilderness from start to end. Something soulful to treat yourself with, including in the years 2026 and 2027.

Whether you are trekking in spring and autumn, from March to May and September to November, considered peak times for Himalayan adventures of summer and winter, the Annapurna Machhapuchre trekking route remains completely open to those visiting at the time. Quiet scenic mountain landscape, picture perfect and just fantastic to let yourself completely free in every step with a more intimate experience, a peaceful Himalayan escape.

How diverse are the landscapes during the short Mardi Himal Base Camp Himalayan Trip?

As you know, the Annapurna Machhapuchhre Trek (the Mardi Himal Trek) is one of the parts of the larger Annapurna Conservation Area. Spread over an area of 7,629 square kilometers and established in 1986, it is the largest conservation area of Nepal and boasts rich biodiversity. From lush forests to arid, desert-like landscapes such as those found on the Tibetan Plateau at high altitudes like the Thorong La Pass (5,416 m), it has it all.

Including on this Annapurna-Machhapuchre hike, you do get to witness such diversity. In the lowlands are the dense forests of rhododendron and bamboo, warm and full of life. At 3,000 m above sea level, you have alpine meadows with less vegetation, and as you go higher, the glacial terrain is in sight, especially from high-altitude villages and viewpoints. Keep your camera ready; the Mardi Himal hiking is naturally delightful, as are the cultural and mountain views.

Where to visit during the Annapurna Machhapuchhre Hike for the best mountain views?

Do not panic yet; yes, you can see mountains even before the Annapurna-Machhapuchhre trekking officially begins from Pokhara. But undoubtedly, certain places offer you a more expansive 360-degree panorama, and on this Himalayan trip, it is none other than the Mardi Himal Base Camp. At high altitude, measuring about 4,500 m above sea level at the foot of Mardi Himal at the center of Mt. Annapurna and Machhapuchhre.

On a clear weather day, along with these iconic peaks, Mt. Annapurna (8,091 m, the 10th highest mountain in the world) and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail, considered sacred and banned from ever summiting), you can enjoy the stunning close-up views of Hiunchuli (6,441 m), Gangapurna (7,483 m), Tent Peak/Tharpu Chuli (5,663 m), Gandarva Chuli, and, of course, Mardi Himal (5,587 m), which looks especially magical during sunrise and sunset.

Which are the best stopping places for a deeper cultural experience?

Along the Mardi Himal Base Camp Trekking Trail are the villages of a larger population of Gurung and Magar. Pothana, Phedi, and Siding, where you also stop to take rest and spend the overnight; cultural encounters and immersion just come as a natural part of the journey. Both indigenous communities of Nepal and a large number of young lads still serving in the British, Indian, and Singaporean armies under the Gurkha Regiment—their hospitality is genuine.

Able to warm anyone's heart are the locals of the Himalayas, who have kept their centuries-old culture alive through the traditional dances like Ghatu, Sorathi, and Maruni, with typical stone-roofed houses engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry, simple yet deeply connected to nature and their people; their life leaves an unforgettable imprint. Perhaps happiness does not always lie in big or lavish things, but rather when your mind and heart both find peace.

Is this trip to Mardi Himal suitable for you in 2026 and 2027?

Yes, absolutely. If you are a big-time photography enthusiast and are eager to see and understand the culture and nature of the Annapurna Himalayas but do not want to typically follow the commercialized route, the Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek is a must to add to your bucket list for 2026 and 2027. Originally called the Annapurna Machhapuchhre Hiking Trail, it is suitable for wildlife sightseeing as well as for those who love to watch mountains.

In case you are wondering whether it is beginner-friendly or not, and whether you can do it with your family or not. Being one of the best short Himalayan treks in Nepal, it stands second to none. Including for budget trekkers, if you are ready to adjust yourself to the basic services, it is a haven. Additional Info

Which is the best season for hiking to Mardi Himal Base Camp to see Mt. Annapurna and Machhapuchre?

One of the best short Annapurna treks in Nepal, the Annapurna Machhapuchre Trekking, is doable and is rewarding throughout the year, even during the times of the year that are typically taken as off-season for high-altitude treks and climbs: winter (December-February) and summer (June-August). Though you may have to pack extra rain gear in summer and dress in layers in winter to deal with cold weather, with the right packing and preparation, it is enjoyable.

But if you are beginners and are more inclined towards stable weather, clear skies, moderate temperatures, and the safest Annapurna Machhapuchre Trekking Trail conditions, spring from March to May and autumn from September to November are the ones known as the most ideal seasons. Specifically, in spring, you have the blooming landscapes, and since autumn often coincides with two of the largest festivals, you have a better opportunity for cultural immersion.

Food and accommodation on the Annapurna Machhapuchre Trekking Trail

Although it is one of the newly introduced trekking routes of Nepal, along the Annapurna-Machhapuchhre Trekking Route, you can find several teahouses, lodges, guest houses, and homestays. Primarily, teahouses opened and managed by Himalayan locals as you go higher and deeper into the remote Annapurna Himalayas; in general, they provide you with rooms with twin beds and simple bedding (mattress, pillows, and blankets).

In the menu, it may also be limited to a mix of typical Nepalese and Tibetan dishes, such as varieties of eggs, potatoes, Thukpa (noodle soups), Tibetan bread also called chapati with honey, pancakes, and hot drinks (tea, coffee), where Dal Bhat Tarkari is a staple Nepalese food (a heap of steamed rice with lentil soup and seasonal vegetables). Rich in carbohydrates and proteins, it is best to stick to it for lunch and dinner. Hearty, affordable, and widely available.

Annapurna Machhapuchre Trek Difficulty Level: Is it suitable for beginners?

Reaching the highest point at around 4,500 m above sea level at the Mardi Himal Base Camp, the Annapurna Machhapuchre hiking journey in Nepal is considered easy to moderate in difficulty level. Low in altitude as compared to the Everest Base Camp (EBC) Trek and, of course, classic circuit treks in Nepal, it is one of the most beginner-friendly high-altitude Himalayan trekking routes where you may even include children and seniors.

While we say so, what we don’t do in the Himalayas is ever underestimate what it is capable of doing. So it is a must that you do some preparation and pack the right trekking gear and equipment for a more enhanced, hassle-free trekking experience from start to end. It is still a high-altitude trek and does involve walking stone stairs, steep ascents and descents, and journeying 3,000 m above sea level, where the level of oxygen drops significantly.

How to pack and prepare for the Mardi Himal Trekking in the Annapurna Region?

Unlike for extreme high-altitude trekking and climbing journeys in Nepal, you may not need to pack extensive gear and equipment, and it does vary based on the time of year you are journeying through; light packing, carrying only those essentials, is the right packing. On booking with Mountain Monarch, we do provide you with a sleeping bag, inner fleece liner, down jacket, and duffel bag to use during the trip and return; it is for you to have the basics.

High-quality, well-broken-in trekking boots, trekking poles, and several pairs of trekking pants and T-shirts are up to you to manage. Likewise, another part of the preparation is to keep yourself physically fit and mentally determined for the Himalayan trip ahead to the Mardi Himal Base Camp to see Mt. Annapurna and Machhapuchre. You may not need hardcore like for expeditions, but it's good to include swimming, running, cycling, planks, lunges, and squats.

Must you hire a guide and porter to go for the Annapurna Machhapuchre Hiking of 13 Days?

Yes, after the banning of Free Individual Trekkers (FITs) in Nepal, which has been even stricter since April 1st, 2023, you may choose not to join fixed group departures, but it is a must that you are accompanied by a licensed guide, such as from Mountain Monarch, whether you go solo, in a group, or are planning a private trip, including the Annapurna Machhapuchhre Trekking and Hiking. An experienced mountain guide leads the way.

Their deep knowledge of the Himalayan trekking regions means you will be informed of what awaits you ahead in the journey, so that you prepare yourself for it and make the best out of it. Be it the challenges, rewards, or the unique culture. Capable of logistics management to arranging permits, they are the real heroes of the Himalayas, and so are porters. They lift a significant weight from your shoulder so you do not overexert yourself.
