Trip Overview

The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek, another name for the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek, is an adventurous route located in the remote eastern region of Nepal, perfect for a Himalayan journey to experience the true off-the-beaten-path in the Himalayan realm of the world’s third-highest peak, Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586m). This Himalayan trip is ideal for adventurers with a passion and adequate time to explore the less trodden areas in the remote Himalayas, far away from chaotic city life and influences. To be precise, the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking Trail is pristine, progressing through the dense rhododendron forests, traditional villages of Rai and Limbu, and eventually the high-altitude alpine meadows and glaciers, also posing ample opportunities to encounter a wide range of flora and fauna.

Though several trekking organizers, including Mountain Monarch itself, offer you customizable trekking routes to the Kanchenjunga Base Camps, the 26 days Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek Itinerary is the standard one that typically begins with a flight to Bharatpur from Kathmandu and takes you to explore both Kanchenjunga North (Pangpema) and South Base Camp (Oktang). While the primary highlight of the remote and off-the-beaten-path to Kanchenjunga Base Camp is, no wonder, the majestic Himalayan views, the diverse landscapes that still retain the true Himalayan beauty, local culture, and warm hospitality ensure you an unmatchable hiking experience in Nepal. Requiring a special permit due to the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area being designated as one of the restricted areas of the country, sharing borders with India and Tibet, for seasoned adventure enthusiasts, the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Hike is a dream-come-true journey in solitude.

At Mountain Monarch, we are offering early bird and group booking discounts on this 26 days Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek cost for 2025 and 2026. Book with us now and be at ease knowing you are in the right and safe hands to make it successfully to the lap of one of the highest mountains in the world, Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586m), also one of the natural borders between Nepal, India, and Tibet. Otherwise, also called the Kanchenjunga Circuit Hiking, covering both of the base camps of Kanchenjunga, this Himalayan trek to Kanchenjunga Base Camp is a journey through a natural paradise, offering the right fusion of spectacular landscapes with a serene and picturesque trekking experience that is a must-do in 2025 and 2026.

However, if you are budget-conscious trekkers, you might want to opt for more budget-friendly and popular trekking trails such as the Everest Base Camp Trek, the Annapurna Base Camp (Sanctuary) Hike, and the Annapurna Circuit Trekking, or more affordable and short Himalayan trips to the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, the Khopra Danda Hike, and the Langtang Valley! Regardless of the route you choose, we ensure you a journey of a lifetime. At the same time, our packages, including the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking Cost for 2025 and 2026, also cover expenses of all the essential Himalayan odyssey logistics, such as food, accommodation, transportation, guides, and necessary trekking gear and equipment.

What to expect during the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek in Nepal?

The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trekking Trail leads one into the hidden world of pristine wilderness, ancient cultures, and Himalayan behemoth giants. This rather less trodden Nepal adventure and trek path provides you with ample opportunity to take in the unique cultures and traditions of such ethnic groups of Nepal as Rai, Limbu, and Gurung, including Sherpas. The trekking route takes you through the diverse ecosystems characterized by lush rhododendron, oak, and chestnut forests to the high alpine zone to the foot of the third-highest mountain on earth, Mount Kanchenjunga. While the snow-capped peaks and glacial plateau captivate your heart and enchant your soul, the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trip is not without long, challenging days on rugged trails demanding reasonable physical fitness.

With proper preparation and planning, the Kanchenjunga Circuit Hiking, which takes a round trip of Mount Kanchenjunga, is an epic Himalayan odyssey generating a true sense of exploration and solitude, which involves making way through a sanctuary for fascinating wildlife, including the elusive red panda, snow leopard, and other snow-dwelling animals that only a few get to be part of. Under the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, basic yet heartfelt hospitality and jaw-dropping views of Kanchenjunga, Jannu, and Yalung Kang, the Kanchenjunga South and North Base Camp Trek is worth everything.

How is the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek a real Himalayan wilderness?

The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trekking, which takes you to not only one but two of the base camps of the sky-perching Himalayan giant, Mount Kanchenjunga, progresses along the Tamur River in one of Nepal’s most remote, untouched, and restricted regions, far from crowded trekking circuits. Over the years, it has led to serene natural beauty and authentic culture with limited infrastructure and modern amenities, allowing an immense sense of personal achievement, growth, and adventure as you complete the circuit trek to Mount Kanchenjunga in Nepal. The journey gradually transitions to the harsher high terrain where the air gets crisper and unveils jaw-dropping views of Makalu, Chamlang, and Everest, as best noted from Mirgin La Pass, Pang Pema Base Camp, and Oktang Base Camp.

Whether you are heading to the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trekking Trail in the off-trekking season or peak hiking season, the trekking route remains serene, making it just the perfect destination for those seeking a real high-altitude trekking experience.

Which mountains are visible during the trek to Kanchenjunga North and South Base Camp?

During the Kanchenjunga Circuit Hiking to Kanchenjunga North and South Base Camps, trekkers are treated to a spectacular panorama of some of the world’s highest peaks in the eastern Himalayas, such as Jannu (7,710m), also called “Mystery Peak”; Yalung Peak (8,505m); Kabru, Rathong, and Talung peaks, including Mount Kanchenjunga itself; and the shimmering Yalung Glacier. The trek goes through the thick forests of oak and rhododendron, where the Wedge Peak, the Twins, Pyramid Peak, and Tent Peak give you company.

Expect wild rivers, terraced farmlands in between, and, as you get closer and closer to your primary destination, Kanchenjunga North Base Camp (5,143 m/16,873 ft) and Kanchenjunga South Base Camp (4,730 m/15,518 ft), sparse human settlements and vegetation where nature and Mount Kanchenjunga dominate the sky horizon. Altogether, the above-mentioned snow-capped giants form a surreal amphitheater of ice and rock, making every step of the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trip a visual feast for mountain lovers, where the vast and tranquil landscapes in sheer isolation deep into the heart of the Himalayas add much to the journey, further enhanced by massive glacial valleys.

Are there any specific monasteries or historical sites along the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Treks?

Yes, while the Kanchenjunga Circuit Hike includes paving the way through the typical villages of Rai, Limbu, Gurung, and Sherpa communities and allows rich cultural encounters whether you decide to take a side trek to the specific sites or not, there are several monasteries and historical landmarks that you can visit for deeper cultural immersion and insights en route to reaching the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp and Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. Famous as the land of the Kiranti people of Nepal, the Limbu people are the predominant ethnic group, renowned for their historical ties to the British Gurkha Regiments and their ancestry of ruling Nepal for centuries; the cultural experience is immense.

Some of the key monasteries along the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek are Ghunsa Monastery, Phurba Chholing Monastery, Ramtang and Oktang Monasteries, and Phole Village Monastery, respectively. A visit to these monasteries in and around the Kanchenjunga Circuit Hiking Trail provides insight into the religious practices and beliefs that have shaped the way of living of local ethnic groups, which slightly showcase resemblances to Tibetan Buddhist culture. Most of these monasteries date back to a century where you can observe the daily rites and rituals performed by monks and local pilgrims living simple yet admirable lives, cherishing a unique identity that treasures nature, mountains, and their people—something that we need to learn in the 21st century, which is severely affected by massive urbanization.

Can you see wildlife during the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trip?

Yes, as the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trekking to conquer two of the base camps of Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586m) is through one of the conservation areas of Nepal, among six in the country, the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, home to a wide array of flora and fauna, the chances of spotting even rare wildlife increase significantly. Established in the year 1997 and spread over an area of 2,035 square kilometers, this protected area, where the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trekking proceeds through, is also home to rare Himalayan wildlife: red pandas, Himalayan blue sheep, thar, and the extremely elusive snow leopard.

Forming the sacred Himalayan landscape, sharing borders with the Chomolungma Nature Preserve in Tibet to the north and Khangchendzonga National Park in Sikkim, India, to the east, Kanchenjunga Conservation Area is a haven for nature enthusiasts as it is for mountain lovers and culture-keen individuals, where the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trekking gives you a golden opportunity to appreciate the cultural and natural biodiversity to the fullest.

Does the Kanchenjunga Circuit Hiking include crossing any high mountain passes?

Yes, the high-altitude Kanchenjunga Circuit Hiking involves significant altitude gain, including crossing several high mountain passes connecting mankind to the unspoiled charm of the Kanchenjunga Himalayas. Reaching a maximum elevation of around 5,143m at Pangpema (Kanchenjunga North Base Camp), crossing high passes is common, which multiplies both the adventure and challenge, followed by a 360-degree panorama of the snow-capped mountain giants. Among them, the Sele La Pass (4,290m) is the most notable one for connecting the southern and northern base camps of Kanchenjunga. Other passes are Sinion La, Mirgin La, and Sinelapche La, which are both the most challenging and most rewarding points.

Understanding the high-altitude Himalayan trekking trail, potential hazards, and keeping oneself properly acclimatized is crucial for a safer, more enjoyable, and more immersive combined trek to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp and South Base Camp, altogether called Kanchenjunga Circuit Trekking. To make it through these passes, including extensive trekking days and some rugged trails also featuring steep ascents and descents in remote areas, having a good level of physical fitness is a must, as is being in the guidance by local experts like Mountain Monarch.

Day 3-4

It takes an almost 45-minute flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur. The flight offers astonishing views of the entire trek of the Kanchenjunga region.

The drive from Bhadrapur to Taplejung is 359 km through different hillsides, villages, and tea gardens. Spectacular views and eye-catching landscapes eventually take us to the District Headquarters, Taplejung. We stay at the hotel at Taplejung (8-9 hrs).

We trekked for three days in the Tamur River Valley. The hike started at a low point of 921m and reached an elevation of 1650m in Sekathum.

We will walk along the river and rainforest, which has rich birdlife.

The valley is incredible, with a deep Tamur gorge, beautiful cliffs, waterfalls, and the gosling sound of glacial water flowing through it.

Our walk begins in the subtropical forest and continues through the narrow valley and the local villages. As the valley opens, we pass villages of traditional Limbu people. These people have been growing rice, millet, barley, wheat, and corn for 2000 years.

Day 5-10

Our trek follows through the Tamur River valley and later turns into the Ghunsa River Valley. Finally, we cross Simbuwa Khola just before Sekathum, which originates from the Yalung glacier.

The narrow trail follows the Ghunsa River Valley and starts climbing towards Amjilosha. As we ascend higher elevations, go through the traditional Sherpa cum Tibetan Settlement.

Some easy days are walking through a dense forest in a remote area.

As we cross 3,000 m elevation, we keep our pace slow, giving us enough time to maintain a comfortable pace and avoid acute mountain sickness (AMS).

When we walk from Gyabla to Ghunsa, after a long climb through a dense forest of pine, fir, and rhododendron trees, we arrive in a traditional Tibetan village called Phole. We rest, eat lunch here, and visit an old Buddhist monastery in the village.

After a six-day hike, we arrive in Ghunsa village(3,400 m), the last permanent settlement on the way to North Kanchanjunga Base Camp.

Day 11-13

We will be exploring Kanchenjunga North Base Camp from Ghunsa. It is a magnificent glacial valley; walk through the moraine and enjoy the stunning view of the Kanchenjunga massif.

This is a very isolated high-altitude glacial terrain with no villages or houses. Our trail climbs gradually through the moraine debris. We have an excellent opportunity to see wildlife like blue sheep and mountain goats, smaller animals like pikka and marmots, and birds of prey like falcons, kites, and eagles.

The glacier starts from around Ramtangat, 4,240 m. The trail continues on its north side with Lhonak, located at the junction of Lhonak and Kanchenjunga glaciers. It is surrounded by stunning mountains flourishing in all directions.

Eventually, we will explore Kanchenjunga north base camp, Pang Pema. We will explore the glacier as much as possible and enjoy the views of magnificent Kanchenjunga and other snow peaks mountains.

Day 14-15

We return to Ghunsa after exploring the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. Then, we prepare to go further up to Selele Base Camp and cross all three passes.

We ascend from Ghunsa along the trail used by local people, walking through a thick forest of birch trees, pine, and rhododendrons.

We also spend the night at the Selele base camp called Selele Kharka. There is a basic lodge for us, and we spend one night here.

Day 16-17

It will be a Challenging trek today with a steep 400 m climb to Mirgin La Pass. It offers an incredible Jannu Himal and Makalu, Baruntse, Chamlang, Kanchenjunga, Kyabru, the Himalayan range, and the Sikkim border.

We follow the walk along the ridges and make the final descent to Tseram. We halt the night at a tea house at Tseram at 4,730 m.

Day 18

Today, we start early from Ramche to reach Oktang (4,730 m), 7 km.

Enjoy the stunning view of Kanchenjunga Himal. There are five different peaks of Kanchenjunga, also called the 5 Jewels of Kanchenjunga. The other impressive peaks of Rothang and Kyabru on the Nepal-Sikkim border are breathtaking. After enjoying all the beauty of Kanchenjunga Himal, Yalung glacier, and other beautiful mountains and hills, we returned to Ramche, walked down to Tserum, and halted the night here.

Day 19-23

We follow an easy trail along with Simbua Khola through varieties of pine and rhododendron forests descending to Yamphuding.

This is a rugged section of this trek as it is difficult to hike due to the landslides and climb 600 m to the Lamite pass(3,500 m).

We walk through the beautiful villages of Chhetri and Brahmins and cross two passes.

On the last day, we hiked around 1200 m and climbed to Tharpu Village. From here, we enjoyed the last glimpses of the Kanchenjunga Himalayan range and the sunset view from the village.

You will enjoy driving through the different scenic landscapes and picturesque valleys up to Bhadrapur.

Day 23-26

While flying to Kathmandu, you will enjoy the beautiful view of the most impressive Himalayan ranges. Then, as you arrive in Kathmandu, the afternoon is free to explore the Thamel, a famous tourist hub in Kathmandu, and do your last-minute shopping.

Additional Info

When is the best time for hiking to Kanchenjunga Base Camp in Nepal?

Unlike other high-altitude treks in Nepal, such as to Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Sanctuary, and even the Annapurna Circuit Trek, the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek to the eastern Himalayas of the country, to stand at both of the base camps of Mount Kanchenjunga, is not recommended for venturing in the summer and winter times. In summer, the trail often gets muddy and slippery due to frequent rainfall, while winter is high altitude, especially at night, goes below freezing point with crisp air, having to add extra layers of clothing as per the seasons.

Therefore, spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), also called the peak trekking and climbing season in Nepal, are the best times for Kanchenjunga Circuit Trekking as well. This time of the year brings stable Himalayan weather, clear skies, and mostly dry trekking trails with low chances of rain and snow. The temperature is also mild, making trekking more comfortable even while you are at high altitude, making these just ideal seasons to tie your trekking boots for an epic Himalayan Odyssey to Kanchenjunga Base Camp.

How are food, accommodation, and amenities on the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trekking Route?

The primary forms of accommodation and places providing you with daily meals and day-to-day facilities along the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trekking Trail are teahouses, local lodges, and guest houses. These usually are small, family-run establishments offering you basic rooms with two single beds and simple bedding like mattresses, pillows, and a blanket that alone might not be enough to overcome colder nights at high altitude, precisely around and in Kanchenjunga North Base Camp and Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. Considering the need, Mountain Monarch is among the few operators who offer you extra sleeping bags or blankets as required.

In the meantime, while menus and amenities like accommodation and modern amenities like Wi-Fi, hot showers, and charging electronic devices can get basic and limited, local guides and porters from Mountain Monarch check the hygiene of the food being offered and make sure you receive the best of the best services and nutrients essential for alpine rambling. In addition, as per your preferences and requirements, we can also arrange private rooms for you in lower elevations, as even simple teahouses tend to get scarce in such remote Himalayan high-altitude regions and are slightly more expensive than the simple ones.

Why do you need special permits for a round trip around Mount Kanchenjunga?

It is known that for trekking in the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area of Nepal, you will need three mandatory permits called the Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) card, Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (KCAP), and special restricted area permit (RAP), generally issued by theNepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Trekking Agency Association of Nepal (TAAN) through government-licensed trekking, tour, and expedition operators, organizers, and agencies like Mountain Monarch. On booking your hike to Kanchenjunga Base Camp with us, we manage all the necessary permits and other trekking logistics for you, including the restricted area permit (RAP).

This special RAP to take a round trip around Mount Kanchenjunga exists because the region has been classified by the government of Nepal as one of the restricted areas of the nation, considering the fragile Himalayan ecosystem, cultural sensitivity, and closeness to both the Tibetan and Indian borders of Nepal. Thus, these permits are for preserving the Kanchenjunga Trekking Region's natural and cultural heritage and keeping some records on tourism to provide help for those in need.

Kanchenjunga Circuit Trip difficulty level and who can do this trek?

The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is regarded as challenging to strenuous high-altitude hiking best pursued by seasoned trekkers with notable physical fitness, endurance, and stamina, followed by high-altitude trekking experience. The legendary trek spans over 20 days based on Mountain Monarch's standard itinerary of 26 days with daily walks of 5-7 hours involving paving the way through rugged trails with significant ascents and descents, reaching the highest point 5,143 m/16,873 ft above sea level at the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp itself. The trekking trails above 3,000m are prone to altitude sickness, and this trip includes almost three weeks of traversing areas 3,000 m above sea level; this is why Kanchenjunga Circuit Trekking, reaching two of the base camps in a single trip, is not recommended for novices new to high-altitude trekking conditions.

While the trekking trail is an extremely rewarding endeavor for seasoned trekkers comfortable with long days of trekking in the remote and isolated Himalayas of Nepal and manageable for beginners with notable physical fitness, preparation, and appreciation of high-altitude trekking climbing gear and equipment, the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trip might not be the right choice for those with respiratory diseases and knee issues. If you are a first-timer heading to the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trekking Route in Nepal, then it is advisable that you begin physical conditioning and mental preparation three months before your official trek departure days, develop a positive mindset, and trek with a licensed guide and in a group.

Why hire guides and get travel insurance for a Nepal adventure to Kanchanjunga North and South Base Camp?

Free and independent trekkers have been banned since April 1, 2023, in Nepal. As such, your trekking, climbing, or any other outdoor adventure that entails entering national parks, conservation areas, or restricted land now requires hiring a government-registered local guide who will also assist you in obtaining the relevant permits and managing other essential trek logistics, including during the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trekking, reaching both of the base camps of Mount Kanchenjunga, the third tallest peak on the planet, under one of the highly restricted areas of Nepal, making it a primary reason for hiring a guide for the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trip. Besides this, guides also share invaluable insights into local culture and environment and ensure your safety even on terrains that are tough to navigate, also assisting with logistics, making your journey to the Himalayas extra memorable and hassle-free.

Likewise, acquiring travel insurance with high-altitude coverage beyond 5,000m would safeguard you from unforeseen events accompanying high-altitude trekking in Nepal for the Kanchanjunga Circuit Trek. Comprehensive travel insurance is an all-encompassing cover against trip cancellation, delays, loss or damage of goods, evacuation, medical emergencies, and altitude sickness. You will be completely peaceful in the Himalayas in the unpredictable mountain environment, even though you travel to the remotest areas of the great Himalayas.
